Wabi-Sabi Syntax is a conversation between tradition and technology, control and chance, past and future. It is a need to search, for meaning in imperfection, for truth in error, and for the self in translation. At its heart is the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi, the beauty found in things that are fragile, worn, or incomplete. After years of living in Japan, the artist's sense of what matters in art gradually shifted and became more complex. Perfection no longer seemed fully honest, and flaws began to feel like new fingerprints. Into this journey, the artist brought something else, his Mexican heritage. Living between two cultures, he carries the weight and wonder of both, along with the uncertainty of that collision. Mexico and Japan are two worlds with different ways of seeing, remembering, and making. What happens when these visions coincide? When their symbols do not match? When one culture misunderstands the other? Rather than smooth over those misalignments, the artist leaned into them. Frictions and misunderstanding became a space for new ideas. The tool for this new exploration of in-between states and worlds was artificial intelligence. He began feeding his own photographs into the models. He wanted to see how the machine would read his images. Another collision was happening, human and machine. What would it make of his visual memories? What would it get right, or wrong? The AI responded with pictures that resembled traditional Japanese woodblock prints, ukiyo-e, but something was always off. Eureka. He had found a way to visualize all these confronting ideas: perfection and imperfection, cultural dissonance, past and present, memory and reality. These confrontations are palpable in the imperfect representations AI naturally produces. Mistakes became part of the work's grammar, a kind of new syntax made of errors and echoes that condenses the many layers of Derech's life experience. We are left with questions. Can a flaw carry emotion? Can a misstep be beautiful? Can a machine, in being flawed, reveal something human?

Wabi-Sabi Syntax は、伝統とテクノロジー、制御と偶然、過去と未来のあいだに生まれる対話である。不完全さの中に意味を、エラーの中に真実を、そして翻訳の中に自己を探し求める欲求でもある。その核にあるのは、壊れやすさや摩耗、不完全さの中に美を見出すという日本の美意識「侘び寂び」である。日本での長年の生活を通して、アーティストにとって何が重要かという感覚は徐々に変化し、より複雑なものとなっていった。完璧さはもはや完全に誠実とは思えず、欠点は新たな指紋のように感じられるようになった。 この旅の中に、アーティストはもう一つの要素――自身のメキシコのルーツ――を持ち込んだ。二つの文化のあいだで生きる中で、彼はその両方の重みと驚きを抱え、同時にその衝突がもたらす不確かさも抱えている。メキシコと日本は、見ること、記憶すること、創造することにおいて異なる二つの世界である。これらの視点が交差するとき、何が起こるのか。象徴が一致しないときはどうなるのか。一方の文化がもう一方を誤解するときはどうなるのか。アーティストはそのズレを無理に埋めるのではなく、むしろそこに身を委ねた。摩擦や誤解は、新しい発想が生まれる場となった。 こうした「あいだ」の状態や世界を探求するための道具となったのが人工知能である。彼は自らの写真をモデルに入力し始めた。機械がそれらのイメージをどのように読み取るのかを見たかったのだ。ここでもまた別の衝突――人間と機械――が起きていた。機械は彼の視覚的記憶をどう解釈するのか。何を正しく捉え、何を誤るのか。AIは、日本の伝統的な木版画である浮世絵に似たイメージを返してきたが、どこかが常にずれていた。エウレカ。彼はこれらの対立する概念――完璧と不完全、文化的な不協和、過去と現在、記憶と現実――を可視化する方法を見つけたのだ。こうした対立は、AIが自然に生み出す不完全な表現の中にありありと現れている。ミスは作品の文法の一部となり、エラーと残響から成る新たな「構文」として、デレクの人生経験の多層性を凝縮している。 私たちに残されるのは問いである。欠点は感情を宿し得るのか。誤りは美となり得るのか。機械は、その不完全さゆえに、人間的な何かを明らかにできるのだろうか。
